Homemade Tortillas

Crazy right!!!! but the idea of making homemade tortillas was just the thing I was looking for. Its really healthy, and we love tortillas at our house….so why not!!!

At first I thought this would be easy, well, it wasn’t that easy 😦

The hardest part was to roll the dough and give those tortillas a round shape! The dough was really stiff, its not a soft bread dough but it was an experiment that we really enjoyed….

Mohammad had a wonderful time making these tortillas, he ate fresh tortillas too (he had to test them!)

The recipe is adapted from Whole Family Fare :

2 cups unbleached flour
1 1/2 cups stoneground whole wheat flour
1 tsp. sea salt
3/4 tsp. non-aluminum baking powder
1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil
1 cup warm water

I just combined everything together and started to kneed the dough (that was hard to be honest)…then the hardest part came….to get circle tortillas!!

I found that rolling your dough then bring any plate you have and just cut around it is easier and I left the pieces for my son (he loved them by the way)

I used my lovely Ikea iron skillet to make the tortillas, it was really easy they don’t that much time…..and we started to eat them…..

The next day we ate tortillas with Zait & Za’tar with some homemade Hummus……good stuff 🙂

Will you ever try making homemade tortillas, or do you think its not worth the time and effort?

The Art of Origami

I happen to love everything Japanese, I mean these people know how to craft! They love creating things from scratch and turning them to amazing art. I already know how great they are in knitting and crochet, when I ever I see a Japanese pattern I just “sigh” , the simplicity of their designs, makes everything they do looks so modern yet gives that handmade touch .

Now, i have seen allot of Origami in the past but they all seem so HARD! So I went to my favorite site YouTube, and there were hundreds of videos…..I found these two videos were clear and simple:

This one was actually something I was dying to make, I saw some ideas using the crane (once I know what I’m going to do with it, I will let you know) Once I saw the video a couple of times it was easy, it wasn’t that hard actually, so really this guy makes everything so simple! Also, I love how Japanese have meaning for everything, the legend says that anyone who folds one thousand paper cranes will have their heart’s desire come true…..isn’t that sweet!!!!!!

Now, I made one for me (one down 999 to go), so I couldn’t just forget about my son! so searched for something simple and exciting for him, and that’s what i created 🙂

This video shows the basic way to create an animal face, so you can create different animals with this design, i think it was a great simple Origami design, that you can use for every age…..just think about an animal that has a face structure similar to a tiger…the options are endless (i guess!)

Try Origami…it’s a fun inexpensive way to teach your childern and yourself the importance of handmade things…..Let me know what you have created 🙂

Eating Homemade Food….

This is going to be my first post about food, which is a huge part of my life. I was raised in a family that appreciate food, especially homemade stuff, my Mom is the best cook i have ever met (at least in my opinion) and to this day I still go back to her to get my recipes.

However, I am trying to make everything we eat at our house homemade….i mean EVERYTHING…..so i started with something that is special to my heart Nutella ……i googled allot and even searched Pinterest…with a little bit of common sense I made my wonderful homemade Nutella….

Of course my number one tester got to have a try….and he LOVED it after all it was made for him 😛

Now to be honest…it’s not as smooth as the store bought one, but you know EXACTLY what the ingredients are, so you won’t be eating anything harmful….but be careful it is Addictive 🙂

Now let’s get to business…..here is what you will need:

250 grams of Hazelnuts

250 grams of Chocolate ( i used dark chocolate b/c it was available)

2 Tablespoons of Powdered Sugar

2 Tablespoons of Cocoa Powder

1 Tablespoon of Vegetable Oil

1 Teaspoon of Vanilla Extract

Pinch of Salt

First, roast you hazelnuts in the oven for 15 minutes at 180 Celsius.

Then, using a clean kitchen towel rub the hazelnuts to get as much skin as you can from them…..after that you will be using a food processor to blend them, it might take a while to get a nice smooth texture. Add te sugar, cocoa powder and oil, blend again.

Now lets get to the best part, melt the chocolate using a double boiler, add the chocolate to the hazelnut mixture and blend….

Taste….add more sugar if you want but for us it worked well this way…

See it was really easy……..hope you try it… believe me it’s worth trying

Hello Sunshine!

Image

It’s sunny!!!!!!! at last…after a week of staying at home most of the time, rain, and snow….not to mention my son’s teething troubles we are having a beautiful sunny day here in Amman.

We couldn’t stay at home!! so we went outside in the garden, and Mohammad enjoyed every moment of it. We played with the ball a little bit, but his favorite game was playing with the dirt (of course)

Image

I really believe these 2 hours we spent outside playing was great for Mohammad, he got his muscles moving, he was also introduced to different textures (sensory play), he met a new friend ( a worm named doodeh that i forgot to photograph it!) and most of all he had FUN……

Thank God for The Sun…….i can’t imagine living an entire week without pure sunshine 🙂 can’t wait for summer….i think we will spend MOST of our time outside……

Please Stop Snowing!!

Its been a long winter this year. It’s been snowing for two days now, its really cold and above this all Mohammad is sick, I believe he is teething ( or maybe that’s what i want to believe) So we are not enjoying the snow, we are just watching some movies and playing silly games.

And to make things worst, our windows are leaking in some water 😦  my hubby has been busy fixing this up…so overall i don’t like the snow!!! i just like looking at it on TV……

At least we can stay in as a whole family and eating and craving for sweets……

Happy Snow Days
